The police investigation into the burglary of the late Goo Hara’s personal safe was finally closed, although late.
Since there were insufficient leads to settle the case, Seoul Gangnam Police Station announced on April 28 that they had decided to temporarily close the case before the statute of limitations expired.
In January 2020, Goo Hara’s safe was stolen from her home, and the police began investigating in March of that year after Goo Hara’s brother, Goo Ho In, filed a complaint. The burglary was made public in October of that year after Goo Ho In and Dispatch released CCTV footage of an unidentified suspect climbing into Goo Hara’s home and stealing the safe.
Goo Hara’s brother Goo Ho In and her acquaintance “K” assumed the culprit was someone who knew Goo Hara personally based on the culprit’s actions during the burglary, such as the fact that they tried to enter the old password to the building. The police, however, were unable to find any suspects and the case was closed on December 17 of last year.
“We investigated from different angles, collecting statements from relevant parties, investigating the scene, reviewing CCTV video, and more,” a police source said, “but we were unable to identify a suspect and filed the case away as unsolved.”
“We couldn’t identify the culprit solely based on the video submitted by the victim’s side,” the police said of the CCTV footage. The data in the surrounding CCTV cameras had already been removed (expired) when we received the report two months after the robbery.
“It is only probable if there is new evidence,” the source said when asked about the possibility of a reinvestigation. So far, there hasn’t been any useful evidence.”
