NAVILLERA REVIEW / SPOILER ALERT
As we have mentioned in our last post, Navillera is a drama with less romance – but more of personal growth and hope. Shim Deok-Chul, the 70-year-old retired man, always wanted to be a ballet dancer yet became a mailman. Inside his mind, he still wishes to become a ballet dancer as a 70-year-old person. Though he knows he will struggle physically due to his age, he pushes through and starts to learn.
While Shim Deok Chul’s ballet dream is slowly coming true, he also touches on other characters’ growths as well:
Song Kang – Lee Chae Rok
He’s a 23-year-old ballerino who slowly lost interest in ballet, he said he’s going through a “slump.” As soon as he meets Shim Deok Chul, and how he must tutor an old man- he was stressed/annoyed in the beginning. But as Shim Deok Chul fights through all the obstacles and improves, Chae Rok found hope and started to be more sincere with ballet as well. He not only started being passionate, but Chaerok was passionate with DeokChul’s performance as well.
Hong Seung-Hee – Shim Eun-Ho
Deok Chul’s granddaughter who just graduated from college and is newbie to the work life. She also struggled finding her passion at work, and just did it because she had to not because she wanted to. By talking to his grandfather & ChaeRok, she realized she’s still young and can figure out what she likes and her passion.
Kim Kwon – Yang Ho-Beom
Chae-Rok’s old friend comes out as an antagonist in the beginning. Chae Rok’s dad was HoBeom’s soccer coach, but the coach beat the kids which made him stop playing soccer. But as he meets Shim Deokchul, he persuades how it’s not too late to re-start his soccer life. Instead of staying resentful, he should start running again in the field – he not only just persuades with words but with action. Shim Deokchul himself dances as a 70-year-old.
As Shim Deok-Chul knows he’s aging and has limited time left, he tells these young friends – to be more free, to explore, to begin while they’re still young. His message can also speak to us!
