Sergeant Byun Hui Su, Korea’s first transgender soldier, was discovered dead in her house.
According to police records obtained by Yonhap News, Byun Hui Su was discovered dead in her home at 5:49 p.m. KST on March 3 after the fire department discovered her. After receiving a warning from the Sangdang-gu National Mental Health Center that they were unable to reach Byun Hui Su, the fire department was sent to her house. Since they have been unable to reach Byun Hui Su since February 28, a representative from the National Mental Health Center believes she might have made the extreme decision to commit suicide.
Byun Hui Su had been dead for quite some time, according to the fire department and police, and her body was still decomposing. Byun Hui Su had suicidal thoughts three months earlier, according to a neighbor who talked with Yonhap.
There was no suicide note discovered at the scene, according to reports, and police are currently investigating the events of her death.
Byun Hui Su joined the South Korean military as a soldier in March 2017, and while on leave from the military, she underwent male-to-female gender reassignment surgery in Thailand in November 2019. She decided to get the surgery because she had been depressed for a long time over her gender identity. She was discharged from the service two months after her surgery, alleging that she had emotional and physical problems that rendered her unable to perform her duties.
Byun Hui Su fought the decision, vowing to keep fighting until she was able to rejoin the force. In February 2020, she lodged a lawsuit with the Army’s headquarters.
In August 2020, he also filed a lawsuit against the Army. On April 15 this year, her lawsuit’s first hearing was set to take place.
