It was confirmed that the mother of actor Jang Geun Suk got a suspended jail sentence and a fine of 3 billion KRW (approximately 2.7 million USD).
Jang Geun Suk’s mother was sentenced by the Seoul Central District Court to a conditional jail term of two and a half years with a four-year probation, along with a fine of KRW 3 billion. Tree J Company, owned by the mother of Jang Geun Suk, was charged with breaching the Tax Offense Act under the bookkeeping rules and fined 1,5 billion KRW (approximately 1.36 million USD).
In spite of the method of the offences, the court observed that “there is much room for criticism in light of the method of the crimes. The defendant evaded more than 1.8 billion KRW (1.63 million USD) of taxes without taking measures to report even after the tax investigation.”
“We took into account the fact that the defendant has currently paid back all the taxes she evaded and has no history of being punished for the same type of crime. We have taken into account the fact that at present the defendant has paid back all the taxes it evaded and has no record of being punished for the same type of crime.” the court added.
The mother of Jang Geun Suk was prosecuted on charges of evading a sum of KRW 1.8 billion by withholding or using the money received by her son from overseas operations and omitting their income from their activities.
His mother pleaded not guilty at the trial, arguing that she did not omit the tax returns deliberately and did not plan to evade taxes. The judge, however, did not buy her claim and found her guilty of tax evasion.
Jang Geun Suk, meanwhile, was considered to be the only Tree J Company celebrity. Jang Geun Suk was confirmed to have been independent from the group after returning in 2018 from his military service.
